Strong second half sends Vikings to seventh straight win

A 50 point explosion offensively in the second half, their second most in a half this season led to five Vikings in double figures in an 88-60 win over Connors State on Saturday, Nov. 22.
It was another quick start for the Viking offense in this one, as Madison Martin capped a 6-0 run to start with a short jumper.
The Connors State offense immediately answered with an 8-0 run of their own, but Martin answered right back with back-to-back three's to retake the lead for Grayson.
Connors State kept it close, but Gracie Burckhartzmeyer pushed the lead to six with a three of her own in her first game back from injury. Connors State rallied to tie it at 23, but the Vikings had an answer with Martin finding Jaycee Ingram for a wide open layup to regain the lead. The Vikings would never trail again in this one; Offensively, that basket sparked a 15-2 run to close the half, as the Vikings took a 38-25 lead into the locker room.
"That run we went on really gave us the momentum," Head Coach Steve Lowe said. "I think we were a little tired, but that group of five that came in was fresh, and really gave us energy we needed."
Scoring in bunches was the theme of the second half. Ingram beat a double team with a basket, Burckhartzmeyer connected on a three and Tay Biglow made it a 20 point lead with a three and a 53-33 lead.
Grayson had 18 steals on the night, with Martin contributing six of them. They took advantage of their transition opportunities. Dree Johnson gave the Vikings a commanding 27 point lead with a three point play of her own as the Vikings closed out the win, as they continued their best start in 15 years.
"I think early on we didn't push the pace offensively," Coach Lowe said. "When we weren't getting turnovers, we couldn't score and that allowed Connors State to set up in their zone, and our zone offense was a little stagnant at times. Overall, I'm happy everybody got to play."
Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by Martin and Chamberlain with 14 points each. Ingram had 13, Fahnbulleh had 12 and Jackson had her first career collegiate double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Burckhartzmeyer was 3/5 from deep in her return.
"Having Gracie {Burckhartzmeyer} back today was big," he said. "She made shots, and it was great having her back on the floor."
For Martin, it was her sixth consecutive game of at least 10 points. This was her fifth time in seventh games as the leading scorer. She's also a perfect 27-27 at the free throw line this year.
"I challenged Madi {Madison Martin}, Tay {Biglow} really all of our returners on scoring and that big schools want to see more points," he said. "They've answered the call, and done really well to start this year."
The Vikings will hit the road on Tuesday, Nov. 25 as they travel to Eastern Oklahoma State College in their final game before Thanksgiving. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
