With the Vikings trailing by seven in the second half, they used an 11-2 scoring run to defeat Ranger on Monday, Feb. 9 to remain in the thick of the playoff race as they look to secure a Region V Tournament berth for the third year in a row.
In a tightly contested first half, Julian Greer gave the Vikings a four point lead late with a three pointer to extend the lead to 31-27. He would follow that up with a chase down block to prohibit a Ranger transition basket and keep their lead intact. Jordan Williams closed the half with a cross-over leading to a basket to give the Vikings a 36-33 lead at the break.
Ranger took over the lead in the second half, but the lead wasn't safe with the Vikings playing at home.
With the Vikings trailing 65-58 with 5:27 left, the Vikings began to mount their comeback. Williams and Caleb Alcineus both hit 3's to pull within three. After a turnover, Williams tied the game at 67 with 3:51 left. Ranger responded with a three to take a 70-67 lead with 3:27 left in the half. Gelonni Ervin sank a pair of free throws to jump start the 11-2 run and Julian Greer gave the Vikings the lead for good with a turnaround jumper with 1:10 remaining. Farvens Ulysse was huge on the glass with a pair of rebounds in order to preserve the lead and the win. He also sank some critical free throws down the stretch to help the Vikings get back in the win column. The Vikings only missed three free throws in the second half, finishing 12-15 from the line.
Alcineus poured in a career high 24 points in the win. Ulysse had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Williams chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds. Greer also had a good night, finishing with 16 points.
The win brings the Vikings into a three way tie for fourth place with Ranger and SWCC with six games to play.
Grayson will hit the road, looking to sweep the season series with Temple. Tip-off is set for 4pm.
