Vikings inch closer to postseason berth

The Grayson Viking Head Coach talks to his players before the start of the game.

After trailing in the first quarter, the Viking offense exploded in an 82-57 win over Temple to not only sweep the season series, but inch them closer to a second consecutive Region V Tournament berth.
Temple jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, before Jaycee Ingram snuck behind the Temple defense and finished the layup in transition. That jumpstarted a 9-2 run that was capped off by a Susan Fahnbulleh three pointer to cut the deficit to 10-9. The defense clamped down the Temple Leopard offense and the offense heated up. After a Leopard turnover, Tay Biglow hit a three to cap a 7-0 run and extend the Viking lead to 16-10. The Vikings would outscore Temple 14-3 over the final few minutes to take a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Temple responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to three, but Lily Melton answered back with a three to extend the lead to six. The offense continued executing at a high level. Fia Filoialli hit a couple big baskets and Madison Martin's baseline jumper gave Grayson their first double digit lead of the game; 31-21 late in the first half. The Vikings held Temple to just nine points in the quarter and took a commanding 37-22 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Vikings opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run; Fahnbulleh's three pointer gave Grayson their largest lead of the game at 45-24. Temple cut into the lead, but the Viking offense couldn't miss. Melton hit a pull up jumper, Fioialli hit a layup and Melton capped a big quarter with a layup, drawing the foul and sinking the free throw to put the Vikings back up by 22 at the end of the third quarter.
Temple trimmed the Grayson lead to 16, but the Vikings were quick to answer. Ingram drove and scored, Fahnbulleh spun and hit the layup and the Vikings were able to cruise to victory for win number 19 on the year.
Ingram led all scorers with 16 points and a season high 21 rebounds (10 offensive) for the Vikings for her fifth double-double of the season. Filoialli had 14 points, Martin finished with 13, Fahnbulleh had 12  and Melton had 10 off the bench for the Vikings. Tay Biglow was the assist leader with five and Dree Johnson had four steals.
The Vikings headed home to take on Cisco on Wednesday, Feb. 18. With a win they would clinch a spot in the Region V Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
