The Vikings opened up Southwest District B Region V Tournament play with an extra inning nailbiting 1-0 victory over Midland on Wednesday, May 13.
Both teams had their chances, putting runners in scoring position, but both teams defense and pitching was the star of the show.
Freshman Natalie Moreaux came into the game needing five strikeouts to break the school record of 212 set by Dylann Kaderka in 2021. The milestone came in the third inning, getting a strikeout looking. Moreaux dominated, recording a two hitter with nine strikeouts across six inning of work.
After a scoreless first nine innings of the game, the Vikings broke through in the 10th inning; all with two outs. Aniyah Pequeno singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Matti Matthews. Riley Mays shut the door in the bottom of the 10th. Mays tossed four no-hit innings in relief, recording a pair of strikeouts.
Offensively, the Vikings recorded eight hits on the day, with Pequeno and Matthews leading the way with two hits each.
Grayson advanced to the semi-final match against fourth ranked Temple on Thursday, May 14.
