After spending six games on the road, the Vikings returned to the upgraded confines of Dub Hayes Field on Friday, Feb. 16 for a twin bill against Dallas College Brookhaven. Grayson split the double header; winning game one 4-0, before a rally came up just short losing 6-4 in game two.
In game one, the Vikings were off and running. In the top of the first, Grady Moore set the tone with a nine-pitch inning, recording a strikeout.
In the bottom of the first, Sloan Barrett led off with a walk, and Kain Sanchez reached on an error. Tyler Brodrick moved both runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice. Jackson Harrell drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch brought home the first run, and John Maldonado Jr drove in a run with a ground out to make it 2-0 in favor of Grayson in the first inning.
In the second inning, the offense received some clutch two out hitting. Jacob Lang lined a double to left, and on the next pitch Brandon Seidmeyer extended the lead to 3-0 with a triple to center. Barrett added an insurance run with a solo blast to right in the fifth inning.
Moore was dominant on the mound, giving up just two hits over five innings of work and striking out five.
Clay Kemp slammed the door shut with two scoreless innings, recording a pair of strikeouts and allowing just one hit.
Offensively, Barrett reached base in all three plate appearances. He finished with two walks, and a strikeout.
In game two, Brookhaven jumped out in front 4-0 in the first two innings. The Vikings weren't phased.
In the bottom half of the second, they came up clutch once again with two out. Liam Krauss and Blake McCarthy were both hit by pitches. Barrett, and Walker Polk followed with a pair of RBI singles to bring the Vikings within two. Brodrick lined an RBI double to pull the Vikings within 4-3. The score remained, until the fifth inning.
Krauss led off the fifth with a single, and moved up 90 feet on a ground out by Kain Sanchez. McCarthy lined a double to right to put runners in scoring position. Seidmeyer tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to left.
Brookhaven put up a pair of runs to take the lead at 6-4. Still the Vikings battled, working back-to-back walks in their half of the sixth, but they were unable to rally.
Offensively, Barrett led the way finishing 2-3 with an RBI, and two stolen bases. The trio of Barrett, Brodrick and Walker Polk finished a combine 4-8 with three RBI's.
On the mound, Cade Sharp struck out three in two innings of work. Beau Beaty tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit.
The Vikings will hit the road again this week for a four-game series at Blinn College beginning Friday, Feb. 23. All four games will be played at 4 pm and 7 pm on Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 24.
