Viking Baseball falls to McLennan

It was a hard fought battle between the Vikings of Grayson and the Highlanders of McLennan as the pair opened their series at Dub Hayes Field on Wednesday, April 3. McLennan came away with a pair of wins on the day.

Game 1

McLennan struck first in the top of the first inning, getting the first three base runners to reach base. A sacrifice fly pushed the first run across, but the Viking defense turned the double play to limit the damage.
Grayson answered right back in their half of the first inning. Sloan Barrett led off with a walk, and moved to third on sacrifices from Tyler Brodrick and Mason Ruiz. Trey Oblas tied the game at 1-1 with a sharp single. John Maldonado Jr and Brandon Seidmeyer both reached on an error, scoring Oblas, and the Vikings led 2-1.
McLennan tied the game in the third on a fielder's choice, but the Vikings kept battling.
In the bottom of the third, Brodrick led off with a single, and Ruiz drew a walk. Oblas loaded the bases with a single and nobody out. Maldonado Jr. grounded into a double play, but the run scored. Seidmeyer reached on an error, scoring a run to put the Vikings up 4-2.
A home run by McLennan in the fifth, cut the Viking lead to 4-3, but an RBI single from Seidmeyer scored Ruiz, who led off the inning with a double put the Vikings back up 5-3.
Two home runs (a three run blast, and a solo blast) in the seventh, gave McLennan the victory.
Offensively, Oblas led the way finishing 2-3 with an RBI. Seidmeyer, Ruiz, Brodrick and Kain Sanchez each had a hit.
Clay Kemp started the game, going four innings, giving up just two runs and struck out three. Cade Sharp had three strikeouts, throwing an inning out of the bullpen.

Game 2

Offense was at a premium, as pitching took center stage in game two.
Fresh off Player of the Week Honors, Trenton Shaw continued his hot streak. He struck out two in the first inning, and induced a pop up for the third out.
Ruiz drew a two out walk in the first inning, and three pitches later, Walker Polk deposited a ball over the fence in center field for a 2-0 Viking lead.
Shaw continued dealing, racking up five strikeouts over the next two innings. He didn't give up a hit in his five innings of work. McLennan didn't record a hit until the seventh inning, but got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring on an error.
McLennan pushed two runs across in the ninth, and the Vikings continued battling, but fell just short on the scoreboard losing 3-2.
Shaw recorded his second consecutive double digit strikeout performance, striking out 10 in five innings.

The series shifts to McLennan to close out the series. First pitch from Bosque River Ballpark in Waco is set for 12 pm and 2 pm.
