Despite some strong performances at the plate, the Vikings season came to an end with a 10-5 loss to the Thunderbirds of New Mexico on Monday, May 13.
After a scoreless first inning, New Mexico jumped out with a three run second inning, but the Vikings responded with a run in their half of the second inning. Brandon Seidmeyer led off with a double, and later came around to score on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt.
The New Mexico offense put up seven runs over the next three innings, but Grayson continued fighting, and clawed into the lead.
Seidmeyer led off the sixth inning with his second double of the game, and came around to score on a groundout from Cylan Madden. The Vikings loaded the bases in the same inning, and a short chopper from Kain Sanchez stayed fair for the second run of the inning.
In the eighth inning, a double from John Maldonado Jr put runners on second and third with two out. Walker Polk lined an RBI single to center to draw the Vikings within 10-4.
Madden sent a double that one hopped the wall in right field in the ninth inning to score Seidmeyer to bring Grayson within 10-5, but they could draw no closer.
The pitching staff reached double digits with four pitchers; Trenton Shaw (two strikeouts), Beau Beaty (four strikeouts), Cade Sharp (one strikeout) and Chase Davis (three strikeouts) accomplishing that feat.
It was a very successful season for the Vikings, eclipsing the 30 win mark overall and winning 19 games in a tough NTJCAC conference, good for third place in the regular season.
Congratulations on a great season Vikings!
